Elbert County Cooperative Extension Website

The Elbert County Cooperative Extension offices are the off-campus, informal educational arm of Colorado State University, where the goal is to provide research-based education and information upon which people can rely.

The Elbert County offices have a dynamic, flexible program, ready to help a diverse, rural/suburban mix of citizens. It offers experts in several areas from agriculture and livestock, home and family living, to horticulture/entomology and youth development programs, including 4-H.

The agriculture/horticulture area answers calls on wildlife management, integrated pest management, weed control, xeriscaping and agronomy.

In addition, certain programs like small acreage management seminars, winter horse seminars and noxious weed seminars are offered to educate the public on such issues as pasture management, water issues, animal selection and forest management.

Master gardeners are also on hand to answer horticulture related questions and to present seminars on gardening in the county.

Information is available to the public on many topics including pasture management, drinking water quality, testing and options, silage and hay preservation, soil sampling, farm and ranch accounting book, water-soluble vitamins, fat-soluble vitamins, nutrition and aging, composting, irrigation for home gardens and septic tank care, among others.

The consumer and family educator answers calls about nutrition, high-altitude food preparation, food safety, food preservation, stain removal and other home-related questions.

The 4-H program is a research-based youth development program that gives children in-depth life skills to last a lifetime. Elbert County has more than 400 youths in ten 4-H clubs that promote projects such as rocketry, cooking, clothing, leather craft, woodworking, livestock and horse care and many disciplines.

Volunteers handle leadership of the clubs and local businesses provide strong support. The Elbert County Fair is the annual highlight for 4-H members' completed project competitions. The fair begins the latter part of July.
